Hi, I saw in a tutorial in youtube how to compress file using 7zip. One example shown was a 4gb file compressed to 800 mb . I tried it on my end to compress a 1.37 gb file and I was expecting it to be smaller in size but I got the same file size as the original. Why is it like that?

This article does not cover splitting up large files. We do not yet have a guide for that, but I did find a tutorial for you that goes over how to do this. Check out How to split large files with 7zip and see if that helps you. We have not tested the guide, nor do we endorse the site, it was just something I found when searching the web.
The amount of compression will vary depending on the file and its type. For example, text files (htmp. php, etc) can usually compress somewhat. Some files such as image and pdf files do not compress much at all. As for the types of compression available in 7-zip, I tested a txt file with each type. The top 4 compression formats, starting from the smallest, are .xz, .7z, .gz, and .zip. The difference between each was very small, so all formats will be fine.
Some file formats cannot be further compressed. For example jpeg file are already compressed and will not zip much smaller. In this case you can optimize the images by size, meta tags, etc. Which reduces the file sizes.
At the EUI you can use the software 7-Zip (which is available on all EUI PCs) to create and manage ZIP files (and many other common compressed archive formats such as RAR, ARJ, LZH and TAR to name a few) as well:
Compress large files to smaller size. You can compress any kind of data or folder and compress. Files like Movies, Games and other kinds of big GB files can be compressed to MB. This software will compress your files at highest ultra mode.
There are several kinds of software to compress large files to smaller sizes. But 7Zip is one of the fastest-growing software to compress the large files highly. It can compress the file 100 times less from its original size. Follow all the steps below to compress large files to a smaller size.
This is the best methods to compress the large files to smaller sizes. There are other alternatives like WinRAR, etc present on the internet. You can even use the most used WinRAR to compress the files or folder. But to highly compress your files or folder use 7 Zip. It one of the most advanced compression tool to compress files.
You can get big difference in compression ratio for different sorting methods,if dictionary size is smaller than total size of files. If there are similar files in different folders, the sorting "by type" can provide better compression ratio in some cases.
7-Zip doesn't know folder path of drop target.Only Windows Explorer knows exact drop target. And Windows Explorer needs files (drag source) as decompressed files on disk.So 7-Zip extracts files from archive to temp folder and then 7-Zip notifies Windows Explorer about paths of these temp files. Then Windows Explorer copies these files to drop target folder.
You're probably using a *.* wildcard. 7-Zip doesn't use the operating system's wildcard mask parser, and consequently treats *.* as any file that has an extension. To process all files you must use the * wildcard instead or omit the wildcard altogether.
7-Zip stores only relative paths of files (without drive letter prefix). You can change current folder to folder that is common for all files that you want to compress and then you can use relative paths:

7-Zip is a free and open-source file archiver for compressing and uncompressing files. If you need to save some disk space or make your files more portable, this software can compress your files into an archive with a .7z extension.
Most Mac devices now come with iMovie, the free movie editing tool from Apple. With iMovie, you can shorten your video and only send a part of it, obviously decreasing the size of the file. Additionally, iMovie contains a feature that prepares your file for e-mail which helps compress it for sending:
I split a 100 MB file using 7zip and uploaded into a website.Later I downloaded all files but unable to get the original file. Each file size is showing correctly but when I extract it extracts only one file of size 1 KB. I tried 7zip,winrar and HJsplit but no use. Please help
I have split a 200 MB video file into 4 50 MB files using 7-zip software and uploaded on to Skydrive. They now have extension*.zip.001 thru *.zip.004. However, I could not find any way to get back to the original single file so that I can view the video from skydrive. Is there any way to do this?
Wonderful. I have been using 7zip since long, but never used this feature before. I used this thread for splitting a 10gb video in smaller files so that it can be transferred to a ntfs format disk. Superlike.
I am trying to send a volume which is encrypted with VeraCrypt. Is it posible to 7zip that in the way described above, to chop it down into smaller files, and the recipient can rebuild by opening the first file in 7zip his end?
However, there are other compressing methods that are more effective than ZIP. First, you should know which files are suitable for compression. Second, you may either use some zipping alternatives or split the zip into smaller files. You will see how to do all that in this article.
Most of the file formats that are necessary to a regular user are already compressed. As technology develops, there will probably be notably fewer files that will require compressing. Until then, it would be better to use third-party tools to compress your archives.
With these tools, you can utilize compression to the max, and also split one archive to a lot of smaller ones. Both of these options will help you while storing, transferring, or sharing the files online.
7-Zip is an open-source free archive manager to create and modify archive files. It can create Archives of any files and open different archive formats like 7z, RAR, Zip, and more. 7Zip is capable of making a highly compressed archive. For example, it can compress a 1GB file(s) into just 20MB or less with the recommended settings without losing any files.
On this page, we are writing the steps to create a highly compressed zip file using 7-Zip software. For example: using this 7-Zip best compression method for compressing large files, you can compress 1GB files into a 20MB zip file. These steps are created to provide a bit of help 7-Zip users on how to make a highly compressed archive by 7Zip using the recommended settings.
File archive manager is an essential piece of software for a personal computer user. This software is used to compress any large file to reduce the size. It saves disk space and makes it easy to store and transfer over the Internet.
Using some file compression tools, we can compress 1 GB of data up to 20MB or less. 7 Zip is one such type of program used to compress files highly. 7-Zip is a very powerful free and open-source file archive and compression software.
Please remember that this compression process does not apply to all types of files. Text files like .txt files, documents, spreadsheets, PDF files are highly compressible. But you cannot compress some files such as mp3, mp4, videos clips etc using 7-Zip or other such types of software.
7-Zip is the best compression software that allows you to take several files and compress them into one file, which is smaller than the overall size of the original files. But, keep in mind that you cannot compress Videos, Mp3s, and JPEGs hugely compared to the original files as these types of files have already been compressed.
After that, set the size of the Dictionary Size to 64 MB. Dictionary size is an important factor and many important things such as compression ratio, compression speed, and system resources depend on the Dictionary Size. Using a higher dictionary size gives better compression but more system resource is required to complete the compression and decompression process.
Another most important option to set in this 7-Zip window is the Split to Volumes. This option allows you to split your large file into smaller pieces. Suppose, if you are unable to attach a file to your e-mail due to the huge size, then you can divide the large file into smaller files with this option. To do so, click on the arrow mark just under the Split to Volumes option and select the size limit of the files.
This is a simple tutorial on the 7-Zip best compression method and settings. Using these settings, you can easily create a highly compressed archive with 7-Zip. But note that, this compression method only applies to text files, documents, spreadsheets, pdf documents, etc. You can not compress any image files, videos, audio, etc using 7-Zip.
I recently ran into a problem. I needed to upload supplemental materials to a journal, but they capped the max file size at 100 MB. That is a lot, but sometimes, you have files that are too large. This journal needed the file format to be Excel. The newer Excel format, .xlsx, is already a compressed version of .xls format. This means that an xlsx file is going to be smaller than even a plain text version of the file.
Basically, this trick works because the compression used by Excel isn't great, but Excel can read files compressed by other tools (depending on the exact settings you choose). This linked post is a good walkthrough, but I wanted to create an even more detailed version using 7-zip rather than WinZip (7-Zip is freely available, unlike WinZip). In my hands, WinZip did lead to a better compression, 90 MB rather than the 95 MB for 7-Zip, but both would have worked. I did not try to change the default much with either tool, any changes I did make meant that Excel could not read the file. But there might be settings that do allow for further compression and still allow Excel to open the file, if anyone discovers these, please let me know. 2ff7e9595c
